House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recently claimed that former President Donald Trump has his back — even as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) threatens his removal via Mediaite.
Speaking with Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures, the speaker — who just returned from a trip to Mar-a-Lago — boasted that Trump is firmly in his corner in his battle with the Georgia congresswoman.
“I spent hours with the president on Friday,” Johnson said. “He and I talk frequently, many times, usually, in a week. We have a long relationship. He’s 100 percent with me! And he said, ‘We’ll get this job done. That’s a distraction.’
“What Marjorie is done with a motion to vacate is not helpful for our party, for our mission to save the country. Because if we don’t grow the House majority, keep the House majority, win the Senate, and win back the White House for President Trump, we are going to lose the Republic.”
It has been noted that Johnson’s claims track with Trump’s public comments, as well as behind-the-scenes reporting.
During a press conference on Friday, Trump gave Johnson a vote of confidence, saying, “I think he’s doing a very good job. He’s doing about as good as you’re going to do. And I’m sure that Marjorie understands that.”
On Thursday, Politico reported Trump and his allies are furious with Greene for her threats against the speaker.
“One hundred percent distraction. Unwanted. And just stupid,” an unnamed source close to Trump told Politico.
Sunday on Fox News, Johnson added that Greene “fails to notice … we have been fighting on the border” and argued that a government shutdown would be counterproductive to the GOP cause.
“When the government shuts down, imagine TSA agents not being paid and flights being canceled for Americans,” Johnson said. :Imagine Border Patrol agents not being paid and those open borders, the responsibility for that being shifted to us. Imagine troops not being paid at this dangerous time. So that simply wasn’t an option for us.”
