Wrestling Legend Dies At 68 After SmackDown

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brett Wayne Sawyer at the age of 68. As of now, the exact cause of his death remains unclear.

 


 

The news of Brett Sawyer’s passing was initially shared by Bobby Fulton, who also took a moment to pay tribute to Brett’s brother, Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer, who had previously passed away. In his heartfelt message, Bobby Fulton expressed his sorrow at Brett Wayne Sawyer’s demise and acknowledged the enduring legacy of both brothers in the world of professional wrestling. He extended his sympathies to Brett’s family, friends, and fans during this undoubtedly challenging time.

Brett Sawyer, born with the real name Brett Woyan, was the younger sibling of the late Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer, who played a crucial role as his mentor and trainer in the wrestling industry. Together, the Sawyer brothers made a formidable tag team in Don Owens’ Pacific Northwest Wrestling during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was during this period that Brett adopted the ring name “Hacksaw” and enjoyed a successful career within the Portland wrestling territory. His achievements included winning the Pacific Northwest title on four separate occasions and claiming numerous Tag Team championships.

Beyond the Portland wrestling circuit, Brett and Buzz Sawyer engaged in a memorable feud with the legendary tag team, The Road Warriors, consisting of Hawk and Animal, in Georgia Championship Wrestling. They battled fiercely for the NWA National Tag Team titles, leaving an indelible mark on the wrestling world. In 1985 and 1986, Brett Sawyer ventured into Jim Crockett Promotions, often teaming up with his brother Buzz. Their wrestling journey also took them to New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1987. In the realm of Championship Wrestling from Florida, Sawyer formed a tag team partnership with Jim Backlund, later known as Jimmy Del Rey, under the moniker “The Playboys.” Additionally, he joined forces with Chicky Starr in Southwest Championship Wrestling, showcasing his versatility and adaptability as a wrestler.
