Clearance on Sami Zayn’s AEW name drop on Raw

Sami Zayn surprised everyone when he name-dropped AEW on this week’s episode of Raw just after the promotion put out their first show in Double Or Nothing.

A lot of people wondered if the AEW mentioned was pre-approved by WWE Officials and conflicting reports on the matter had become a topic of discussion inside and outside of the company.

However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer cleared the air on the segment recently and confirmed that the whole thing was indeed scripted:

“It was scripted. They just lied to their own employees to make it out like Sami went against the script, not realizing anyone with a brain knows about the 15 second delay. Not to mention the people who did know would eventually tell those who don’t.”

Continuing on the topic, Meltzer said that the whole thing was executed like it would have been in Eric Bischoff’s WCW. It draws no money and only makes paranoid talent even more paranoid, making employees think they are working for an insane company.

If it wasn’t scripted, I’m sure we would have heard about the “backstage” heat against him. Think on that.

    WWE is f*cked!

I am sorry, but how does the mentioning of AEW make people paranoid and how does it make them think WWE is insane?

This was just a shock value thing, nothing more, nothing less. Just like the time Kurt told Sami and Kevin that TNA were hiring.

There are many reasons WWE might be viewed as insane and cause paranoia, this was not one of them.

Also, the WCW comparison does not hold water. All Sami said was you could ask him about the promotion. WCW would have said “you could have asked me about how terrible AEW was”.
The closest we have come to WCW recently was the throne smashing by Cody, and even that was not as badly handled as WCW would have done.

All in all, people should just be glad that WWE are finally acknowledging other promotions exist instead of acting like mentioning them is some kind of insane move.
