Federal officials are investigating whether the gunman responsible for the deaths of eight people at a Dallas-area mall on Saturday had any links to white supremacist ideology. According to a law enforcement official, investigators are scrutinizing Mauricio Garcia’s social media accounts to determine if he expressed any interest in white supremacist and neo-Nazi views. The FBI has also interviewed Garcia’s associates and family members regarding his ideological beliefs.
The official said that investigators are examining financial records, other online posts believed to have been made by Garcia, and other electronic media. Garcia was killed by a police officer, who found him at the suburban Dallas mall. He had a patch on his chest reading “RWDS,” an acronym for “Right Wing Death Squad,” which is used by right-wing extremists and white supremacist groups. The investigation is still in its early stages, and the authorities have cautioned that no conclusion has been drawn regarding Garcia’s motive.
