Vince McMahon recently got involved in a fresh controversy. The latest Wall Street Journal story on Vince alleged that he paid at least 4 women over 16 years to cover up sexual misconduct. After the report about additional non-disclosure agreements that were signed to keep women quiet, many are wondering if more people will come out with accusations. Vince reportedly reacted to the allegations. It does not appear any more women signed NDAs. There could be others who didn’t want to burn bridges with WWE who decided against seeking a settlement. It remains to be seen if any will speak out. It turns out Vince is no selling the matter. While many might think this has affected sponsors, that is not the case.

Vince McMahon controversy is not scaring off the sponsors

Many in the wrestling industry have the belief that nothing will happen to Vince McMahon. Others, such as the Wall Street Journal reporters who broke the story, think sponsors might eventually walk away.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why that isn’t necessarily the case:

“Put it this way, until the investigation is over, Vince is going nowhere… He’s just not. When it’s over, I think it depends on what they come up with, but I think that he, in his mind, is going nowhere… He’s very difficult to unseat.

You know, they [WSJ reporters] were talking about the sponsors? All these people are aware. Nobody has given the vote of confidence to Vince. None of the TV stations, none of the sponsors we said the other day. If you’re a sponsor, you’re not going to bury him unless you’re walking out of the deal and, you know, nobody has walked out on the deal.

If that were to happen, that would be something, but none of the TV stations, none of the sponsors. There’s been none of that. They’re happy working with the company. So, there you go. It’s an ongoing story and it’s interesting to listen to their thoughts, people from the outside. If you tell the story to people in the outside world, as I have, it sounds so much worse to people on the outside than people in wrestling because, in wrestling, it’s like, ‘Wink, wink. We all know it, everyone knows it,’ it’s almost expected and it’s one of those things where it should not be that way. They really should learn from this, but it’s been in the culture there for decades. They’ve been publicly traded for decades and it’s still in the culture there. Eventually, it needs to stop and the fact that it was still going on, you know, early this year, late last year, you know, is a really bad thing.”

Dave Meltzer had previously reported that things were business as usual at WWE Friday Night SmackDown and McMahon was running creative. One person reportedly said that McMahon was no selling everything and that he was “Letting everyone know he’s not blinking.” McMahon also reportedly said something to the effect of “Have fun guys, have a great show” after the production meeting.

Opinions vary depending on the person backstage but, as Meltzer pointed out, nobody can imagine Vince not being there. It was also noted that most people, even people more powerful than Vince, would not have survived the allegations.
