WWE Superstars ‘not aware’ Roman Reigns was returning at SummerSlam

This past weekend’s WWE SummerSlam event saw the return of ‘The Big Dog’ Roman Reigns to the company. Reigns has been out of action since the March 20th episode of SmackDown on FOX. This was reportedly due to worries surrounding COVID-19, his family and previous battles with leukaemia.

The tagline for SummerSlam was “You’ll Never See It Coming,” and funnily enough Roman Reigns’ return was apparently kept a secret from WWE Superstars backstage. Dave Meltzer reported as such on the most recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio.

There had been speculation that Roman Reigns would be returning, however this was not confirmed at all by the company until Reigns appeared last night. With WWE moving to the Amway Center in Orlando, it offers the chance to have a more ‘pandemic friendly’ setting. WWE can apparently better socially distance in the larger setting, and in terms of optics for the viewing audience the Thunderdome presents far more of a ‘big time’ feel.

Although not confirmed, it is likely that the WWE Universal Championship picture going forward will feature Roman Reigns, The Fiend and Braun Strowman. The Fiend defeated Braun Strowman to recapture the title at SummerSlam.
